How To Choose A Corporate Gift Basket.

In recent years gift baskets have become extremely popular, with an increasing number of options available, plus a number of speciality baskets, such as golf enthusiasts, new baby and gourmet baskets. Another type of basket in great demand is the corporate gift basket.

In choosing corporate gifts, a company has to decide what it is trying to achieve in giving the gift at all. Like any marketing decision (and let's be honest, this is marketing), the choice needs to take into account costs, purpose and likely benefits, as well as any possible adverse reaction if a bad choice is made. So, your corporate gift basket, if that is the general choice you make, should be appropriate not just to the recipient but the level and importance of the business relationship you have with them.

I am stating the obvious in saying that the corporate gift basket you send needs to both please the recipient, and further your business relationship with them. But it should also be kept in economic proportions. If you are sending to a customer who spends $50m a year with you, and you send them an obviously cheap $15 gift basket, the gift is likely to do your business relationship more harm than good. Send a luxury gift basket worth $990 to a customer who spends $100 a year with you, is not a sensible decision, unless they happen to be a great friend of yours; in which case, it is not really a corporate gift anyway.

When making your choice of gift basket, and what to include in it, then do think very carefully. The best marketing, the best customer relationships, are built on an individual basis. Ask yourself: do I not prefer to be treated as an individual, and receive gifts that are personalized? Of course you do; it shows the giver has thought about you and taken you into account as a person. Treat the corporate gift process like a mass mailing addressed "Dear Sir or Madam", and you will damage your customer relationships.

It follows, then, that your choice of corporate gift baskets should be well tailored for the recipients. An element of personalisation is very important, especially for large (spending) customers and their company executives. Just having something engraved can bring a touch of personalisation, even if all customers have exactly the same contents in their gift basket.

What To Put In A Corporate Gift Basket?

Deciding what to put in corporate gift baskets requires a bit of thought, which benefits from the "know your customer" rule. Once you have decided on the budget for each basket, and the type of gift that would be appropriate, it is then a matter of being selective within those criteria. For Christmas gift baskets, some advance planning is definitely needed so you can source the best value and quality of products.

You can find suppliers of corporate gift baskets online who appreciate the need for personalisation and will offer a range of options for you. So, if you choose appropriate quality products to fill the basket, and they are suitable for your gift "target", you can then have one or more items personalised.

Should you decide to have a basket with just one item personalised, then ensure that is placed strategically at the top of the basket, so the recipient sees quickly that you have thought about them as a person. The more individual touches you are able to add to the contents of the basket, the better for your customer relationships. But always remember, your choices must be appropriate.

The types of gifts you can put in the basket are really only limited by imagination. Engravable items can include wine boxes, golf flasks, cufflinks, business card cases. Really, just about anything you can engrave. If you have a gift in mind you cannot engrave, then a metal plaque added could be engraved, such as with a wooden pen box or executive filing case. The more you use your imagination, the more individual your corporate gift basket will be.

The Perfect Christmas Gift

I suppose there is no such thing as the imperfect Christmas gift, but I am sure that there are some gifts that are less desirably received than others.

Let's take a look at the "Personal Trimmer." Every time I hear of one of these items or see it in the store I think, "nose hair trimmer." Hey, there is no way of getting around it: if you give this gift you are telling the recipient that the strand of hair hanging out of their left nostril is unsightly. Or, since the product is also marketed for the ears, you've noticed a bit 'o fuzz on their earlobes.

One way to test the wisdom of gift selection is by doing this: imagine your loved one at work hanging around the water cooler. "Bob" comes up and says, "so, what did you get for Christmas?" Your loved one replies, "I got slippers, some shirts, a tool case, and a really cool personal trimmer." Sure, like he is going to share this information with blabbermouth Bob, who is known to share "news" throughout the office. You get the picture: if he is ashamed of the gift he'll lie and say, "a one year subscription to Sports Illustrated" or some other tale. Never encourage your loved ones to lie!

For the ladies, you must always be careful what you buy for them. Us menfolk are at a disadvantage: we're wired to think practical while women are wired to think sentimental. Exercise equipment might be smart, but like the fella in the Best Buy television ad who purchased exercise equipment for his sweetheart, you don't want your wife to assume that you think that she is fat. In case you make that error, you must think fast and say, "no babe, I just want to keep you heart healthy so I have many more Christmas' with you!"

Unfortunately, men don't always think that fast. Better yet, if your wife tells you what she wants, get her that. You can always run over to Victoria's Secret later to purchase lingerie which she'll like because you like seeing her wearing it. Trust me!

Are you going to the neighbor's for a Christmas social? Then leave the Royal Dansk cookies at home. Better yet, don't buy them. Are they awful? No. Just too common. Like the unwanted fruitcake that gets passed around the family and neighborhood year after year the Royal Dansk cookie tin is getting the same reputation. If tasked with the responsibility of bringing a dessert and you aren't baking, pick something up at the local bakery. It'll be fresh and it will be eaten. Let them worry about their cholesterol level.

What should you buy the boss? Well, the standard gifts over the years have been wine or hard liquor, something for his desk [photo frame], or a personal item like a fold up umbrella. Boring! Rather, have some fun and purchase spyware for your boss so that he can spend the time snooping on his employee's internet access. See if that wins you valuable points during review or promotion time!

Seriously, maybe the whole gift thing has gotten a little bit out of line. Maybe we should think of more practical gifts to give such as: spending time with an elderly relative; volunteering to help coach your child's soccer team; or by making a cash donation to a relief agency in the gift recipient's name.

Two thousand years ago the greatest gift ever given, Jesus, was freely given to mankind; I believe anyone freely receiving His love is receiving that very same gift. Jesus is one gift that perfectly suits mankind: God's boundless love and unrestricted forgiveness.

Humor for Women - Buying Christmas Presents.

My daughter loves to spend money – my money. When it comes to her money, she’s a real miser. This is very apparent around holiday time. When she sees ads for new and exciting gifts (read expensive), she wants me to buy them as Christmas presents for her friends and family members (including her, of course).

This year I told her she was responsible for buying all the gifts for her family and friends. She looked at me blankly. The National Bank Of Mom had unexpectedly shut down.

I did give her some money for shopping, but I told her that if she wanted to spend anything over that, she’d have to use money she’d saved up from her allowance. It was amazing to see the transformation from spender to bargain hunter. Suddenly a trip to the Dollar Store wasn’t boring, it was a great idea.

She did complain about how hard it was to stay within the budget so I told her to be creative. When I was young we made gifts for our family. (I know, I know, no kid wants to hear about what happened when their parents were growing up unless it’s really embarrassing and they can make fun of you.)

My daughter was mildly interested until I told her that one year we made closet sachets out of oranges and cloves. They were fun to make and smelled great. As I talked, the look on my daughter’s face told me that she obviously thought that my body had been taken over by aliens, very uncool aliens apparently. How could I even consider something like that?

So I suggested other gifts she could make:

No Whining Day Certificate. I know it might be easier to find a unicorn in my backyard, but I have high hopes that she can actually go a whole day without complaining.

Grandparent Fun Day Certificate. A day where she invites her grandparents to do something that they would like to do (I would even pay for this). This certificate also includes a No Whining clause, so she can’t complain when they suggest that they’d like to go to a museum. Who know, she might even enjoy it.

25 Reasons Why I Love You List. This won’t cost anything but it could be my favorite gift. It would be great to have my daughter tell me why she loves me. (Of course, she does tell me that she loves me, but sometimes she says it right before she confesses that she did something I’m going to be really mad about.) It would also be nice to have some written proof that she loves me on the days when she’s sulky and the only people she’ll speak to are on the other end of a cell phone.

Actually I think that’s a great idea. Instead of going to the stores today, I’m going to start to write I Love You lists to give to my family members. I hope you will too. Happy Holidays!

This the Season to be Shopping

The Christmas season is vastly approaching. Thanksgiving will be here in a little over a month. Holidays can be really stressful with parties, traveling, company in the home, and most of all the shopping. With all the hustle and bustle of the mall, finding a parking space, and dealing with rude salespeople it can be a nightmare. Avoiding this anxiety can make the holidays much more pleasant. How might this stress be skipped you might ask, it can be with the speed, ease, and convenience of online shopping. Each year the number of people doing their holiday shopping online multiplies and for good reason. There are many advantages to taking your holiday business to the web.

One of the biggest draws to online shopping has to be the convenience and ease of shopping from home. Who needs the mad traffic and headache of finding a parking space at overcrowded malls? You don’t have to leave home to shop online. When you are at home you don’t have to worry about stores closing at eight or nine at night. If you wish to shop at one a.m. it is okay. You can shop when the time is best for you. Food and beverages are always overpriced at malls and stores, but at home it is already there for your consumption. Shopping out can be such a chore and tiresome, but in the comfort of your home it can be pleasant and peaceful leaving your holidays to enjoy.

If you are looking for a specific item for your gift list it can be like finding a needle in a haystack if you have to go from store to store to find it. Your Mom may want a monogrammed mother’s bracelet and Uncle Tom may want that Swiss Army Knife he has had his eye on. With just a few clicks you can find what you are looking for instead of jumping all over town wasting time and gas. It is also easier to compare prices as you search. It is speedy and easy to get what you want.

Not only is it good to find specific things on your list, but you can shop your entire list in one place. The internet is a one stop shopping experience. You may have clothing items, sterling silver jewelry, and electronics to buy and instead of running all over to get them, the web is a virtual mall meeting all of your needs. Most major retailers offer online shopping and independent businesses can service your every need. In one sitting your Christmas shopping can be taken care of with the all encompassing internet.

If you are a savvy shopper on the hunt for deals, the web is the place to go. Online stores are in the business of drawing shoppers with their great deals. If you do a little searching you can often find free shipping, high percentages off, and bogo offers to entice your business. Take some time and see what deals you can run across to take the strain off your wallet.

Many people still have hang ups about shopping on the internet. Some people may fear identity theft with the internet shopping, but most online retailers have secure payment services like Verisign. Be sure to check out the security policies. Another concern is “when will I get my items?” If you order in advance there is no need to worry about getting your purchase. In a time crunch always go for second day or next day shipping for your peace of mind. The benefits to online shopping are worth getting past needless fears.

The holidays should be about family, friends, and celebrating the birth of Christ, not worrying about buying gifts. Gift buying should be easy and fun. The internet can solve your holiday gift buying stress. With its many rewards, online shopping can take care of your gift giving needs and save you time, money and energy you can give to more important things. It is best to always remember that the best gift of all is your love and care to your family.

Jewelry Christmas Gifts That Sparkle and Shine.

The joyous season of Christmas is steeped in tradition, and gift giving is one ritual that is inseparable from this holiday. Who hasn’t had difficulty at one time or another in choosing a suitable present for a beloved family member or a dear friend? Fortunately, jewelry Christmas gifts are widely available and there is an endless variety of styles from which to choose. Twinkling and shining, they reflect the nature of that season to be jolly.

Sparkling and glittering are two words that would describe diamonds. Browse through the World Wide Web and you’ll see a plethora of online stores that showcase jewelry Christmas gifts. Imagine a woman’s pleasure at the shimmering sight of diamond snowflake dangling earrings or a glittering diamond bracelet adorned with traditional symbols associated with Christmas. Men, on the other hand, will surely appreciate flashing yet tasteful diamond cuff links. Other gemstones make wonderful jewelry Christmas gifts. Sapphires or rubies set in gold, sterling silver or platinum will gleam subtly from rings or necklaces.

Not all jewelry Christmas gifts that glitter need to be expensive, though. Whimsical and unique designs at an affordable price for the holiday season abound. For instance, brightly colored, rhinestone encrusted pins shaped like Christmas trees are widely available. For young recipients, bracelets, necklaces or anklets made from gold- or silver-plated metals, engraved with their names for a personal touch, will fit snugly in any Christmas stocking. Stores or web sites that specialize in vintage and antique items also offer bright jewelry Christmas gifts. Take your pick from pieces such as brilliant poinsettia-shaped hairpins or nativity-inspired pendants dotted with Swarovski crystals.

For many centuries, men, women and children have been eagerly counting the days until Christmas morning, when everyone would rush to the Christmas tree to open their presents. The giving of gifts is a time honored tradition, and the selection of presents that will be appreciated and enjoyed by those whom we love is no trivial task. Scintillating jewelry Christmas gifts have always been part of that tradition and they continue to contribute to the glow that the holiday season brings.

Ideal Christmas Gift - No Matter What Age Everyone Loves This.

Want to put a smile on a loved one's face or hear the laughter ring out from the kiddies on Christmas day. Well the first move is to get it right when choosing their presents.

How nice for you to hold an ear to ear grin all because this year you chose the ideal gift for the family.
Deciding on what is right for each individual can cause unnecessary stress and worry to the build up to Christmas.

Xmas is a happy/joyous event where we celebrate our lords being. Jesus is a very special person in our life, an out of sight lodger in our thoughts and always in our heart who gave us all those close people in our lives.

How many times have you had to return goods that were not the right size/color? How many people thank you for that unwanted gift that they never get to use.

Lets us get into the Christmas spirit today by getting it right. You have enough worry with a shopping list as long as your arm and a credit card bill that you may well be still paying off into the New Year.

Then there's the slaving over a hot stove, presents have to be wrapped and at the end of this hectic schedule you are expected to smile on December the 25th.

What gift can you give to please every member of the family or lover with a guarantee to put a smile on their face?

It does not take Einstein to figure this out.

Guarantees are priceless when they come in the form of a smile. Have you ever seen an unhappy holiday maker?

In some cases parents are taken for granted by the kids and are never given a minute thought all because they are busy opening presents. Well that ends on holiday when the kids smother you with hugs and kisses thanking you for the best Christmas ever.

What do you give the kids on Christmas day abroad? A bucket/spade. What to give your lover? A date for your wedding. Grandparents will just love not having to wrap up for warmth.

It is far cheaper to spend Christmas abroad than stay at home. Recap on your list of Christmas duties.

Shopping/Christmas presents/ decorations/lights to be erected/turkey needs stuffing/ trifle to be made/tree and baubles /wrap presents and on top of all this the worry of having forgotten anything.

Get it right and get away.

Kids Make - Christmas Note Books, an Ideal Gift

Little notebooks are so handy to jot down messages, phone numbers, shopping lists and appointments. Little note pads can be kept in handbags, or next tot he telephone, on a desk, in school bags and all other sorts of places. Being this useful, a nice note book would make a great Christmas for Mum, Dad, your sister or Granny, Your Auntie, Uncle, the neighbours, your teacher or friend and anyone who may need to jot things down from time to time.

Buy a small, soft covered note pad, don't spend too much because it's going to be re-vamped.

To make the Rudolf note book, start off by using a grey piece card to cut out two identical antlers. Stick these out from the top of the note pad so that they hang off the top of the pad. Next cover the front cover of he pad in brown paper, covering the bottoms of the antlers. This creates Rudolf face. Stick on two white ovals for eyes. Use a felt tip pen to draw on some pupils. Cut out a large circle from some red paper. You guessed it! That's Rudolf’s nose. Stick it down towards the bottom of the pad. You can stick some red glitter to Rudolf's nose to make it shiny.

To make the Christmas tree note book, First cover the front of the note pad in green paper. Field a piece of green card (the same size as the notebook) in half vertically and cut out a Christmas tree shape. Stick sequins to the Christmas tree and sprinkle on some glitter if you wish. Stick to the Christmas tree to the note pad with a line of glue down the fold of the Christmas tree, so that it stands out slightly from the pad. To Finnish it off, cut out a star and stick it to the top of the Christmas tree.

Remember, not to use too much glue. You don't want to stick all the note pad pages together.

When you get started you will have lots more ideas of other delightful Christmas designs that you can apply to a note pad. Your friends and family will love one of these cute little stocking fillers, gone on why not make a couple.

Roberts writes for http://www.santaspostbag.co.uk/ If you publish this article please link back to http://www.santaspostbag.co.uk/ if you would like an image to use of the festive note pads you will find one http://www.santaspostbag.co.uk/christmas-notepads.html please do NOT hot link to the image, copy and save it. Original Christmas Presents

Beat the rush and buy Christmas presents for friends and family in style! The smart way to avoid the crowds and pick up great value is to attend an auction. You’ll be amazed at what you can find and you’ll be amazed at the sheer variety.

The best way is to take out a one month subscription to various auction search services which have the widest coverage of forthcoming auction lots anywhere on the web. However, if you want to take a short cut, stay tuned to this blog for a few tips! We will be pointing you in the right direction twice a week over the next six weeks with some terrific ideas, thus enhancing your reputation as a savvy and imaginative gift buyer!

In an online world, people often forget the simple pleasure of writing in longhand! It is even more pleasurable to respond to the numerous gifts and invitations received over the Christmas period with an antique pen. There are some wonderful old pens available at auction, frequently modestly priced, and they combine the fact that they look good, feel good and write good!

Some are truly collectors items and their distinctiveness or rarity may be reflected in their prices. Their desirability may, however, be determined by either your budget or the degree to which you care for the recipient! The broadest coverage of all comes from eBay though there is an array of other options as this glimpse into an online 'auction search' database indicates.

Items for sale this week include:

A pair of late 19th /early 20th century jewellers scales with brass pens and weights in a mahogany box (Peter Cheney - Littlehampton, West Sussex)

A 19th century Anglo Indian carved ebony document box with an intricately fitted interior for documents, inkwells and pens with a tray raised on bracket feet (Northeast Auctions - Portsmouth, New Hampshire)

A small assortment of dip pens including mother of pearl and carved ivory examples (Fieldings - Stourbridge, West Midlands)

Two vintage Waterman fountain pens (Reeman Dansie - Colchester, Essex)

There is no estimate for the first two lots while the latter two should be relatively inexpensive at around ฃ25 - 30 each. If you want to browse the web more thoroughly, we recommend scanning sites that focus on bricks and mortar salerooms.

Happy hunting!

Seven Christmas Presents Never to Give Your Mum.

Your mum deserves the best. But mothers are often a bit overlooked in the gifts department. Many mums spend hours of time and lots of energy picking out just the right gifts for everyone in their families—only to find coal in their own stockings! If you want to give your mother a present this year that she’ll be thrilled to receive, follow our advice and avoid these seven gift blunders.

A blender - Getting anything related to the kitchen can be a touchy gift for a mom. It sends the message that you think her place is in the kitchen—which, even if she’s the main cook in the house, isn’t the message she wants to get on holidays! Avoid other kitchen-related gifts as well, like food processors, aprons, sponges, dishwashing soap, or electric mixers. If you do want to give her kitchen hardware, get her a luxury-based item like an espresso or cappuccino maker (only if you know she likes espresso and cappuccino!) or a fancy bronze teapot. Make sure the item you get isn’t associated with workaday food preparation. Choose a luxury item she’d appreciate but probably wouldn’t buy for herself.

A new cookbook - This one’s even worse. It sends the message that you don’t like the food she ordinarily cooks—especially if you pick a cookbook that features food she doesn’t normally cook, like Thai food if she’s a strictly meat-and-potatoes person, gourmet if she prefers quick-and-easy recipes, or Mexican if she’s a health nut. An exception, however, is an autographed cookbook from a celebrity chef she really admires. Make sure it’s someone she’d love an autograph from—a personality whose show she watches religiously.

A mug - If she’s like most moms, she has a million mugs already. Mugs are the kind of gifts most people give when they’re at a loss as to what else would make a good present, and nobody’s fooled. When you were a kid, you could probably get away with giving her a “World’s Best Mum” mug for a Christmas present, but now that you’re an adult, it’s a habit you should give up.

Scented bubble bath - It seems like a great idea at first—but scented bath oil, lotion, shampoos, or any other “smelly” gifts tend to be the most often returned. That’s because most people are very specific about the smells they like and don’t like. If you get the wrong scent or even the wrong brand—where a “lemon” scent from one brand might be radically different from another company’s idea of “lemon”—you might just wind up giving her a gift she’ll never use.

Breakfast in bed before she’s ready to get up - Sure, breakfast in bed is always appreciated. But don’t bring it in before she’s already awake. Waking her up before she’s ready sends the message that this isn’t a day she can relax. Give her the message that you want her to have a nice, relaxing and leisurely day by bringing her tea or coffee first, made just the way she likes it. If she’s still half awake when you bring it in, tell her you brought her something to warm up with while you put breakfast together. Then take your time cooking. Make sure she gets the sleep she wants, especially if she’s usually up early taking care of the family.

A day full of chores - Nothing gives a mum more chagrin than having to do most of the housework on a special holiday. Pitch in to do the laundry, clean the kitchen, clear the table—and don’t wait for her to ask! Most mums appreciate help with chores just as much as the most well thought out present.

A vacuum cleaner - These are bad gift ideas all around—even if she really does need a new one. It’s never a good idea to give a mother any gift that reinforces her role as the person in charge of household chores—it sends the message that you see her as a maid. This includes feather dusters, mops, brooms, and any other cleaning supplies. If you do want to give her a cleaning-related gift that’s sure to be appreciated, however, give her a break from doing the chores. Buy her a month’s worth of house-cleaning from a reputable service—get recommendations from friends and family if you don’t know which to choose. Or offer to do her most-hated household chore for a month—and she’s sure to love you for it.

Your mother’s love is unconditional. She’ll probably still love you after you give her that same “World’s Best Mum” mug you gave her last Christmas. However, if you want to make your mother happy on birthdays and holidays, follow our advice and avoid these gifts. You might just find that your holiday experience improves, as well!

What's Your Christmas Plan

Have you developed your Christmas plan yet? If you have not then now is the time to get started. Christmas will be here before you know it and it will pay to get ahead of the rush.

Most people wait until the last minute to get ready for Christmas and then they wonder why their Christmas is so emotionally draining and nerve wracking. Christmas is the most chaotic and stressful time of the year so it makes sense to plan it out to cut down on your stress and strain. Only through planning and preparation can you have a well coordinated and pleasurable Christmas. Those who wait until the last minute to prepare oftentimes experience a disappointing and dysfunctional Christmas which creates a lot of anguish and bad feelings all around.

With a little bit of planning you can avoid having a bad Christmas. You can escape the last minute hysteria and pandemonium because you will have a plan that will smoothly get you through the entire holiday period.

Okay, here's what you need to do right away. Take out several sheets of paper or 3x5 cards. Write down the following headings at the top of each sheet of paper or card: Cards, Gifts, Decorations, Food, Tree, Lights, Toys, Parties and Miscellaneous (Catchall). These are the nine major categories in which all your Christmas planning and preparations will revolve around.

Now that you have these nine categories identified (some will overlap) you need to start brainstorming ideas and listing individual "to do" items under each category. For instance, under "Cards", you will list and provide answers to questions like what type of cards do we want to send this year, where will we purchase the cards, who do we send the cards to, when should we mail the cards out to ensure they arrive prior to Christmas day, etc. Under "Tree" you might want to ask what type of tree should we put up, where is the best place to buy a tree, what type of tree accessories do we need, etc.

By making such a brainstorm list you are now able to develop a bigger picture of how you want your Christmas to go. You can now refine your Christmas tasks, arrange and schedule them into a logical sequence, delegate them to others and track the progress of each individual task until it is accomplished. It gives you the organization and control you need to ensure that your Christmas turns out the way you want it to.

Using this type of planning system or something similar, you can take all the drama out of Christmas and enjoy a great holiday season.

What Is It About Nautical Gifts For Christmas

If you are considering looking for a nautical gift, for a friend or relative, this Christmas, then you are in good company.

Buying gifts is something that just about everybody indulges in at one time or another during the year, especially Xmas. So, it is no surprise to know that millions search for gifts on the internet. What is more of a surprise though is that nautical gifts are amongst the most popular. Why should a gift of a nautical nature be more sought after than a romantic gift or gift for mum? If recent search statistics are to be believed, then a gift to do with the sea is the more "popular".

What is it, then, about a gift of a nautical origin or inspiration, that makes them so popular? Of course, the word “gift” is English, so the statistics focus on English speaking countries, most notably the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. All of those countries have strong nautical connections. England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland have always had nautical traditions; settlers from Europe travelled to North America by sea in vast numbers, as they did later to Australia and New Zealand. The countries of Britain have been in many sea battles over the centuries.

Millions of people, then, have some sort of nostalgic and historic connection to the sea, so probably feel attached, at a deep level, to matters nautical. That may, or may not, explain the immense interest in nautical gifts that we see today.

Another very simple reason for the popularity of sea related presents could simply be the attractive range you can find with a nautical theme. Here are just a few of the types of sea and ship related gifts you can find online:

Nautical Wall Hanging Gifts

You can find many nautical gifts for hanging on walls, such as a brass bell, mirrors, clocks, bar signs and sculptures.

Bar and Tableware Gifts

You can find some lovely nautical gifts for a bar or the table. The nautical theme has been applied to coasters, table mats, salt and pepper pots and other types of attractive gifts.

Ship Models

Models of ships have been popular for centuries and remain so today. Their beauty and intricacy makes them exceptional gifts for the nautically minded.

Books

Books are an ever popular gift to give and receive. For someone who is interested in nautical subjects such as pirates, seamanship, navigation and boats, then a nautical book is doubly appreciated.

Nautical Lighting

Some of the most attractive nautical gifts are the lighting products. Lanterns and lamps based on a nautical design are very popular and deserve to be so.

Travel Gift Ideas

Whether for work or fun, people that travel a lot are easy to buy for. There are simply a ton of gadgets and travel accessories that can satisfy your need for travel gift ideas.

1. Dreamsacks – Okay, here’s a nasty little secret about traveling. Hotels don’t always wash sheets and definitely don’t wash comforters. Yes, it creeps me out to think about it as well. Dreamsacks are designed to keep the creepy crawly bacteria, funguses and bugs off of you. Dreamsacks are essentially sleeping bags made from sheets, to wit, they are thin. Most even come with a built in pillow because if the sheets are sketchy, one doesn’t really want to even contemplate the pillows. Dreamsacks will set you back between $40 and $60.

2. Relief Bands – Relief bands are the latest, greatest way to stop motion sickness. If you’ve ever flown on Air Turbulence Airlines, you’ll know the immediate benefit of these bands. Worn like a watch, relief bands send a small electronic shock into the bottom of your wrist which counters the nausea impulse to your brain. No, it doesn’t hurt and it is a lot better than getting intimate with those popcorn bags in airline seat backs. Expect to pay between $60 and a couple hundred bucks depending on how fashionable you want to look while bouncing around in your seat. Good for boats and cars as well.

3. Japanese Paper Soap – Perhaps one of the greatest travel accessories ever made. For any traveler, bars of soap are a disaster. They never stay in their cases or wrapping resulting in soap suds and gunk everywhere. Japanese paper soap solves this problem nicely. The paper is, well, paper, but has built in soap. You simply get your hands wet and rub a piece of the paper between them. Instant suds! When done, toss the paper out. Pretty cool, eh? This incredible invention will set you back a whopping $10 for 50 sheets. Heck, I use them at home.

4. Nomad Travel Journals - A little self-promotion here. Nomad Travel Journals are compact writing journals that let travelers keep notes about their trips. Really great for creating a record of who was on the trip, things seen, people met, contact information such as email address, phone numbers and so on. As the years pass, you can read back through your travel journal to relive trips and laugh yourself silly over funny events you might otherwise forget. A tremendous gift for student travelers and backpackers. You can click the link at the bottom of this article to see the travel journals which cost $25 with case.

Spacetrip - Christmas Present of the Year.

There's no doubt what the most popular Christmas present will be this year. Influenced by the launch of the first manned mission to Mars next month, you will most likely get a present with stars, a gift card for a spacetrip.

The interest in the suborbital trips (100 km above the surface of the Earth) have grown steadily since the launch 20 years ago, but the market has basically exploded this year since the official announcement of the Mars mission. More low cost spacelines have entered the market and you can now find suborbital flights for as low as US$ 3,495.

Space tourism is one of the markets that have developed the most during the last decade, with the opening of the Starbright Hotel on the moon, as well as the low orbital hotels that started accepting guests. However, accommodation in space is still expensive for the average household, so the suborbital flights with thirty minutes weightlessness during the three-hour flight, with four hours preparation, will for some time be the most popular trip.

The spacelines might however in the future face fierce competition from space elevators, like the one that are projected for construction start within a couple of years. Once it is fully functional it will start to ship cargo to space, but it will as soon as possible accept passengers to get back the giant investment. Even though the elevator become successful, it will take several years before there will be more elevators in the world, to get in the competition for the space traffic with the spacelines.

Pontus Edenberg is the editor of News of Future, a publication about the future of space tourism and news about society, health, environment etc. People of the world are invited to comment on the news and take part in shaping their future.

Smart Buying for Christmas Lights

Christmas Lights are very popular during the holiday season because it gives life to our Christmas decorations. They come in different styles and prices. So here are some tips in buying the right Christmas lights for your home at a reasonable price.

Compute the area where the Christmas lights will be used.

You have to measure the exact length of the area where you will place the lights then add a few inches depending on where your power outlet is located. So if you are planning to hang them outside your home, determine the length of your home as well as the distance to the power outlet.

However, if you plan to place the Christmas lights on your Christmas tree, you can use a tape measure to determine the exact length of the Christmas lights that you will need to buy.

Find out how many strands of Christmas lights you need.

This will depend on your measurements of the area needed to be covered with Christmas lights and length of strands of Christmas lights you will purchase. For example, your measurement is 50 feet and each strand of Christmas lights measures 10 feet, then you will need 5 strands of Christmas lights.

It is also advisable to use shorter strands of Christmas lights so that you can easily replace them if one strand gets damaged.

Determine the type of Christmas Lights you need.

To easily determine the type of Christmas lights, you need to know your purpose of your Christmas light. Will you be hanging them outside your home? Are you planning to have indoor Christmas lights together with your Christmas tree?

Once you know your purpose then check out the features of Christmas lights which include bulbs, strand type and plug style.

• Bulbs: The bulbs can be in different sizes, shapes and color. You need to determine your Christmas holiday motif so that you can select Christmas lights that match your other decorations. Then, decide on the number of bulbs you prefer because Christmas lights vary in the number of bulbs per strand. Look in the package and you will see the number of bulbs included in the Christmas lights.

You also have to check the wattage of each bulb because the illumination of your decoration will depend on the wattage and number of bulbs you will use. Moreover, bulbs have different lightning effect. Some bulbs can have a steady glow while others blink in different ways. So choose the Christmas lights with the bulb that you will love.

• Strand type: The strand of Christmas lights can either have serial or parallel wiring. In a serial wiring, all bulb will not light up if one of them is broken. Thus, it is best to have a Christmas lights that has parallel wiring so that even if one of the bulb is damaged, all other bulbs will still illuminate.

• Plug style: Select an end to end style of plug if you are planning to use several strands of Christmas lights. This will allow you to easily connect all strands of lights together. But if your decorations will only require one strand of Christmas lights, then the plug style may not be that important.

Do a comparison shopping

It is always advisable to do comparison shopping to get the best deal for your favorite Christmas lights. Visit the shopping stores that sell Christmas lights in your area. You can also watch out for sales on these stores. Another way is doing an online shopping.

This would be convenient for you if you do not have enough time to visit the stores in your area. Remember to jot down the prices of each preferred Christmas lights so you can compare them once you have visited all the stores.

You can be a smart buyer for Christmas lights by simply following these tips. Thus, you can start lighting up your home using your favorite Christmas lights during holiday season.

Things to Know When Buying Christmas Lights

Months ending “ber” signify the upcoming Christmas season. In these holiday season,

you usually hear children singing carols and you see people exchanging gifts.

Christmas is a reminder of Christ’s birth.
During this season, people are busy making Christmas lists. Written on these lists
are Christmas presents you wish to give to your family, Christmas decors for your
house be filled with Christmas spirit, and food to cater during Christmas eve.

Christmas decorations have always been one of the priorities of our Christmas
shopping list. It is because these decorations complete the spirit of the holiday
season. Christmas trees and Christmas wreaths are examples of these decors. And
what’s a Christmas tree without Christmas lights?

Christmas lights carry out the whole aura of this season. These lights give life to
other Christmas decors through their varying designs and colors.
People usually put these Christmas lights on Christmas trees along with other
decorations. Others also decorate these Christmas lights on their gardens to give a
joyful image both on the inside and outside of their houses. In buying Christmas
lights, you must take into consideration the following guidelines;

• Make a layout of the design of the output you wish to have.

This would enable you to estimate how long the Christmas lights must be. This would
also give you a picture of the expected outcome and overcrowding of lights could be
avoided.

• Determine the length of the area you wish to light and estimate at least 35
to 50 feet in case of adjustments.

• Search for appropriate lights to decor.
If you’re going to decorate a big tree, use big lights to complement with the tree.

For shrubs and bushes, use miniature lights.

• Decide on what best fits the design. Choose from having plain white or go
with varying colors instead. Set up a regular kind of lights or go with those of
specialty lights.

• Take into consideration the power supply your Christmas lights need. The
voltage should correspond with the power source you have.

• Do wise shopping. Since it’s a holiday season, stores compete with each
other. These would give you the chance to shop in a store that would provide same
quality of the product at low price.

Caution:

• It is better to find an electrician to install the Christmas lights. With
this, further injuries could be avoided. You must also instruct the electrician to
put these outlets on a switch so that you don’t have to unplug all outlets one by
one.

• Christmas lights with timer are more appropriate. These would necessarily
mean that you don’t have to switch the lights off. It would automatically turn off
depending on its settings.

• Use the strings appropriate on its purpose. If it’s for outdoor use only, use
it as it is. This would ensure your safety for probable malfunctioning might happen.

Kinds of Christmas Lights

• Small incandescent bulbs – these are small 120 volt lights. These are similar
to night lights, each having 5 – 10 watt bulb.

The advantage of having these kinds of Christmas lights is that the bulbs are
positioned on parallel. These would mean that a possible failure of one bulb won’t
affect the function of other lights.

• Mini-lights – these are 2.5 volt incandescent light.

To be able to plug these 2.5 volt lights in a 120 volt outlet, you must connect them
in series. The difference between the above mentioned Christmas lights and these mini
lights is that when one bulb failed to function, then the rest of the bulb would also
fail to function.

Origin of Christian festival

It is unknown exactly when or why December 25 became associated with Jesus' birth. The New Testament does not give a specific date. Sextus Julius Africanus popularized the idea that Jesus was born on December 25 in his Chronographiai, a reference book for Christians written in AD 221. This date is nine months after the traditional date of the Incarnation (March 25), now celebrated as the Feast of the Annunciation.[23] aa book written in 23 A.D. was also considered to be the date of the vernal equinox and therefore the creation of Adam. Early Christians believed March 25 was also the date Jesus was crucified.[23] The Christian idea that Jesus was conceived on the same date that he died on the cross is consistent with a Jewish belief that a prophet lived an integral number of years.

The identification of the birthdate of Jesus did not at first inspire feasting or celebration. Tertullian does not mention it as a major feast day in the Church of Roman Africa. In 245, the theologian Origen denounced the idea of celebrating Jesus' birthday "as if he were a king pharaoh." He contended that only sinners, not saints, celebrated their birthdays.[citation needed]

The earliest reference to the celebration of Christmas is in the Calendar of Filocalus, an illuminated manuscript compiled in Rome in 354.[2][24] In the east, meanwhile, Christians celebrated the birth of Jesus as part of Epiphany (January 6), although this festival focused on the baptism of Jesus.

Christmas was promoted in the east as part of the revival of Catholicism following the death of the pro-Arian Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. The feast was introduced to Constantinople in 379, to Antioch in about 380, and to Alexandria in about 430. Christmas was especially controversial in 4th century Constantinople, being the "fortress of Arianism," as Edward Gibbon described it. The feast disappeared after Gregory of Nazianzus resigned as bishop in 381, although it was reintroduced by John Chrysostom in about 400.

History Of Christmas

Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. Christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of Jesus' birth with various customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals. Traditions include the display of Nativity scenes, Holly and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Father Christmas (Santa Claus) on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill, compassion and peace.

In most places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26. The Armenian Apostolic Church observes Christmas on January 6, while certain old rite or old style Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, the date on the Gregorian calendar which corresponds to 25 December on the Julian Calendar. The date as a birthdate for Jesus is merely traditional, and is not widely considered to be his actual date of birth.[1]

The word "Christmas" is a contraction meaning "Christ's mass." It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038.[2] Dutch has a similar word, Kerstmis often shortened to Kerst. The words for the holiday in Spanish (navidad), Portuguese (natal), Polish (Boże Narodzenie), French (noël), Italian (natale), and Catalan (nadal) refer more explicitly to the Nativity. In contrast, the German name Weihnachten means simply "hallowed night." After the conversion of Anglo-Saxon Britain in the very early 7th century, Christmas was referred to as geol,[2] the name of the pre-Christian solstice festival from which the current English word 'Yule' is derived.[3] In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ (Χριστός). Since the mid-sixteenth century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ.
